The Reign of Darkness
A plane of shadow, melancholy and fear, the Shadowfell (also called the Shadow World) is a mirror realm of the mortal world touched by the negative energy plane. A mysterious realm that mortals fear, it is the world’s dark reflection, containing in abundance elements that most people prefer to avoid – death, darkness, and peril.
In the Shadowfell, the brightest day the pale sun can muster is as full of gloom as a stormy day in the Natural World. The night can be so dark that it feels like a clinging fog, with few stars to break up the black sky. When the moon shines, it is a dim lantern of unusual hue, such as amber or crimson. Light in the Shadowfell can be half as bright as it might be in the world and colors pale in the cold, dismal air.
Emotions are equally dulled, turned to apathy and melancholy. High spirits are rare in the realm and the presence of death is felt everywhere. Negative emotions – fear, anger, greed – might be amplified. Such feelings are easier to raise in the murky atmosphere, leading visitors from the world who linger down a self-destructive path.
The land is broken and deformed. Where it provides any sustenance, it is covered in strangely colored plants or populated by emaciated animals. In other places, it is dangerous in ways those wise to the nature of the world might miss. The energy of the Shadow World can become so strong that it saps life and amplifies necrotic power. It can strengthen the undead while sapping the will to survive in the living. Negative energy can gather to pool and flow like water.
